The new Socius for the Jesuit Conference of East Asia and Oceania arrived last November 11 in the person of Fr Benedict Jung Kang-yup (KOR), taking over Fr Pham Minh-Uoc (ASL). We thank Fr Minh-Uoc for his faithful service and wish him well as he continues his ministry at the EAPI. Fr Benedict is also the understudy of Fr Tom Steinbugler (PHI) in the area of finances.

Fr Tom Stein steps down as JCEAO Treasurer

After the close of business on 23 December 2009, Fr Thomas B. Steinbugler (PHI) will complete his term as Treasurer of the Jesuit Conference of East Asia and Oceania. 

All financial matters pertaining to the Conference should then be directed to: Fr. Benedict Kang-Yup Jung. Telephone numbers and mailing address all remain the same.

In Manila

Fr Lester Maramara (PHI) joins the staff at Arrupe International Residence replacing Fr Manuel (PHI). Fr Pham Van Ai (ASL) turns over his responsibilities as Director of Juniorate to Fr Jeff Chang (MAR), who arrived last June 2. Fr Ai will leave on June 14, visiting Malaysia and Singapore before going teach theology in Vietnam. Also leaving Arrupe Residence is Fr Jim Meehan (PHI), but he continues to generously serve the Conference with his new assignment at the East Asian Pastoral Institute.

Fr Minh-Uoc's on the mend

Fr Minh-Uoc (ASL), JCEAO Socius, has had a second stent put into one of his arteries and is recuperating at Norwood in Adelaide. His two procedures went well and he is making good progress. Prayers for his complete recovery.

Beginning December 12, Fr Mark will be traveling to Myanmar, Thailand, Australia and Singapore. He will return to Manila on January 20, 2009.

Fr Minh-Uoc will be visiting Australia from December 5, 2008 to January 6, 2009.

On December 28, 2008–January 2, 2009, Fr Tom Steinbugler will be visiting friends in Davao City and in Cagayan de Oro City.

The JCEAO Office will be closed from December 24, 2008 to January 4, 2009.

Office Staff Movements

On September 6, Fr Mark Raper transfers to Manila. He will reside at the East Asian Pastoral Institute while he serves his term as President of JCEAO. On September 12, he will travel to Rome to attend the meeting of conference presidents with Fr General. He will be back at the office on September 24.

Fr Tom Steinbugler returns from Australia on September 8, after attending the meeting of Province Treasurers in Sydney.
